When royal courtiers rushed to Hatfield House to tell her of Mary’s death and her subsequent succession, Elizabeth proclaimed “This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” Queen Elizabeth went on to reign for 45 years until her death in 1603. She was the last Tudor ruler in England.
